Study in Europe: Slovenia
Slovenia is a country in southern Central Europe bordering Italy to the west, the Adriatic Sea to the southwest, Croatia to the south and east, Hungary to the northeast, and Austria to the north. As Slovenia lies at the crossroads of the Alps, the Mediterranean, the Panonian Plain and the Dinaric Mountain Range, through the centuries, the individual Slovenian regions have developed various ways of life, customs and cultural creativity.
Slovenia has a population of 2 million, and the official language is Slovenian. The capital of the country is Ljubljana, it is the largest city as well as the political, administrative, economic, educational and cultural centre of Slovenia.
Higher Education System
Over the last seventeen years higher education in Slovenia has undergone several legislative and structural changes, rapid institutional development and a significant increase in student numbers.
The higher education reform in 2004 introduced a three-cycle structure according to the Bologna process guidelines. The first cycle has a binary system of academic and professional study programmes leading to the first cycle degree (180-240 ECTS, 3-4 years). The second-cycle offers masters courses (60-120 ECTS, 1-2 years). The third-cycle comprises doctoral studies (180 ECTS, 3 years).
Higher education institutions are universities, faculties, academies and professional colleges. There are fifteen higher education institutions which cover all fields of study: three public universities (incorporating forty-one faculties, three art academies and four professional colleges) and twelve private higher education institutions (one university, five faculties and six professional colleges). Under certain conditions, private higher education institutions can also offer state recognised and co-financed courses.
The academic year begins in October and lasts until the end of September in the following year. It is divided into two semesters: the winter semester usually runs from October to January and the summer semester from February to the middle of July.
In Slovenia, the CMEPIUS - Centre of the Republic of Slovenia for Mobility and European Programmes ( www.cmepius.si ) is the organisation managing scholarships awarded by the Government of the Republic of Slovenia. Another source is Ad futura - Scientific and Educational Foundation of the Republic of Slovenia . It is a public foundation which provides various types of financial support ( www.ad-futura.si ).
Ad futura - Scientific and Educational Foundation of the Republic of Slovenia was established by the Government of the Republic of Slovenia with the aim of providing opportunities for the international mobility of students and researchers. Ad futura manages scholarships, study loans for tuition, living expenses or other costs. The specific rules are given in each call for applications.
Courses of Slovene as a Second/Foreign Language
The Centre for Slovene as a Second/Foreign Language promotes the understanding of the Slovene language, literature and culture on an international scale. The scholarships are mostly for lectureship in the Slovenian languages. For more information, see www.centreslo.net .

Slovenia: Alternative Media and Culture in
Slovenia and Bosnia
This course provides an international field experience in the arts, culture, and social activism in two of the recently-independent nations of the former Yugoslavia. The program will be centered on Ljubljana, the capital of Slovenia, and Sarajevo, the capital of Bosnia, and cultural projects in the city that have fostered aesthetic experimentaion and social debate. Sarajevo features a mix of religious and historical traditions, and is emerging out of the war and upheaval that dominated the city during the 1990s. In Ljubljana, students will examine the activities around Metelkova, a cultural enclave in the city created by punks, squatters, and intellectuals in the 1990s, and that today consists of several music clubs, art galleries and studios, gay and lesbian clubs, and meeting places for teenagers and others.
Students will use writing, video, audio, and photography to explore the dynamics of alternative media and arts - their successes and failures, dynamism and chacultural production -- its successes and failures, dynamism and challenges.
Students will also have a chance to meet internet activists, filmmakers, radio producers and others exploring innovative approaches to media. The course includes a short trip to Zagreb, the capital of Croatia, to broaden their experience of developments in the Balkans.
Eligibility and Prerequisites:
A student of any academic discipline may apply. This 3-credit ICA will serve as a companion to COM 301, Alternative Media, to be offered in Spring 2013. Enrollment in COM 301 is recommended by not required. Experience in media or artistic production is beneficial, but also not a prerequisite. Permission of the instructors is required for enrollment in the ICA. Rising sophomores are able to apply, but should contact the faculty directors of the program.
The tentative cost of the program is $2,350 (the specific fee will be determined once more logistics have been arranged). This fee includes lodging, most meals, transportation within these countries, seminars, entrance fees, and insurance. Please note: Airfare is not included in this cost.
All students are eligible to apply for OIS scholarships. There is a scholarship section on the main application form in each program application packet. Loans are also available to eligible students through the Financial Aid Office in SAS.
