In Europe the desire to increase international mobility among students is a widely shared objective.
According to a new study done by Academic Cooperation Association in collaboration with the Gesellschaft für Empirische Studien and StudyPortals BV the number of English-taught bachelor and master programmes in non-English-speaking European countries has more than tripled over the last seven years. In 2001 it was 725 and in 2014 it was 8,089 (see full coverage here).
Of these 494 were taught in Denmark which positions Denmark with the highest percentage of programmes in English in any non-English-speaking country in Europe.
Also at Aarhus University international mobility has a high priority and every year new programmes are added to the long list of bachelor's and master's programmes taught in English.
"We believe that international programmes and, in turn, international students are essential for maintaining and developing our high quality in teaching and research. International students bring new perspectives and an invaluable global perspective that characterize the modern work place and knowledge creation. Hence, international diversity is and will continue to be a key component of quality at Aarhus University," says Kristian Thorn, Deputy University Director for Student Administration at Aarhus University.
For the first time this year Aarhus University now also offers English-taught programmes at the Faculty of Arts at Bachelor's level, which up until now was only offered by Aarhus School of Business and Social Sciences. Most of the universitys programmes in English are, however, taught at Master's level where more than half of all programmes offered are taught in English.

- On March 20, 1728, the Boston Gazette ran an advertisement offering long distance instruction. And so teaching outside the classroom had its beginning.
- 1728: Boston teacher offers instruction through weekly letters to anyone in the country.

- 2000: CourseNotes.com launches with dozens of classes at the University of Texas. The service provides professor web sites, including online course documents, calendars, grades, quizzes and surveys.
- Jan. 1, 2008: The term MOOC is coined by Dave Cormier of the University of Prince Edward Island.
- 2013: The Open University builds its own MOOC platform, Futurelearn, with universities from the UK. More MOOCs: Open2Study in Australia and Iversity in Germany.

There were an estimated 1,816,400 enrollments in distance-education courses in K-12 school districts in 2009-2010, almost all of which were online courses. 74% of these enrollments were in high schools.
