Institutions of Higher Education

The language of instruction is usually German. Many institutions, however, also offer classes in other languages.

Most universities offer the following study programs:

  • Bachelor program: 6 – 8 semesters
  • Master program: 2 – 4 semesters
  • Doctoral program: minimum: 6 semesters

Moreover, there are:

Entry & Residence

Citizens of other EU/EEA countries neither need a visa nor a residence title. They merely need to register with the residence authorities within 3 months after their arrival in Austria.

Citizens of non-EU/EEA countries need a residence permit if the intended duration of the stay exceeds 6 months.

In order to be granted a residence title, the student will need to prove that he or she is in possession of the financial means necessary to sustain a living. This may be done e.g. by submitting a confirmation issued by your future employer in Austria. Proof of the following monthly income will be required of you:

  • up to 24 years of age: €432.27 per month
  • over 24 years of age: €783.90 per month (as of 2010)
