The design preserves the character of the original 1870s Victorian construction while creating one of the UK’s most technologically advanced buildings.
HOK directed the phased refurbishment and conservation of the building, creating a highly flexible headquarters while accommodating the client’s 24-hour use of the building.
Although conservation issues dictated that certain areas be taken out of office use and returned to their original function, HOK created 22 percent more office space by adding new offices at roof level and in other areas.
Working with English Heritage and specialist conservators, significant historical and architectural elements were identified and restored to their original appearance. Discreet use of original materials, colors and building techniques retains the historic character and harmonizes new and old elements.
A phased program spanning 17 years allowed occupants to remain on site and operations to continue without interruption.
The project won the prestigious Europa Nostra Medal of Honour for the meticulous detailing work.
